#2 Oh, the pain... Arthritis - Is Surgery the Answer?

Arthritis - Is Surgery the Answer?

It is always the question -- to be the answer, study, do research, and try other links to get a good picture of how your live will be in the future. Many people today suffer from arthritis. This is a very painful disease and one that they say has no real cure. In addition to medication, exercise, vitamin therapies, and "homemade cure", surgery may be an alternative when all else fails. This of course is dependent on the type of arthritis and the severity of the condition. Doctors are not anxious to operate on patients with arthritis and want to be sure that all other alternatives have been tried prior to surgery.

When you do go to a surgeon, you need to be prepared for the way that these professionals view surgery. First of all, surgeons consider is the life expectancy of the artificial joint and the life expectancy of the patient, as well.

Use your head and study all alternatives. Arthritis patients need to be their own advocates. They need to look at the effects arthritis is having on their life. If one is severely restricted in what he or she can do, it may be time to have a discussion with a doctor or surgeon.

Could an artificial joint be better than god's way? Let's look at this more closely - An artificial joint lasts 15 to 20 years, maybe longer with new technologies, but long-term data is not available as of yet. If, or when an artificial joint need to be replaced because it has "gone bad", the surgery or "revision", as it is called is quite a difficult surgical procedure and often more difficult than the original surgery. This fact is what makes surgeons reluctant to operate on younger people.

Two surgical models that surgeons consider:

Option #1 - Pain intensity and age

In this model, the age of the patient is critical. Life expectancy today is 75-80. Considering this and the fact that a joint may last only 15 years, surgeons may be hesitant to operate until a person has reached 65 years old. As far as pain intensity is concerned, most surgeons will agree to operate regardless of age if he pain is unbearable .

Option #2 - Lifestyle

In this arthritis model, age and pain intensity are still factored in, but added to the equation is the idea of the quality of life for the patient right now. In other words, if a person cannot do the things he or she wants to do because of the joint pain, the idea of missing out on "life" and waiting until age 65 for surgery does seem impractical and not very sensible.

This surgery for arthritis pain decision must be made cautiously. The patient and surgeon need to examine all the options. The pros and cons of joint surgery must be weighed carefully. Surgery should only be considered as a viable solution if the evidence is overwhelming that a joint replacement is necessary and would prove to be a tremendous benefit for the person.

Even though there is the present concern about needing a revision (or another replacement) after a period of time, there are possible advantages to getting an artificial joint at a young age.

- Newer materials may last linger than 15 or 20 years.

- Since technology is always improving, by the time a revision is needed, the procedures may be much easier than current procedures.

- Younger people tolerate surgery better.

- The patient has many years ahead of him or her to enjoy the new joint an have an active lifestyle.

- Your Lifestyle and your family diet might be causing the problem. Simple changes might be a solution for you. - You might have Lyme Disease in the joints. http://subtleenergytherary.org for Lyme disease - check out miracle mineral solution - MMS.

Is joint surgery right for you? Only you can decide, along with your doctor if your present arthritic condition warrants surgery. The question will be - If I want to live an active pain free life, is surgery the right option for me and is this the right time to have the surgery?
